Google is giving a new voice to small businesses – using their existing phone numbers. The company announced recently that Google Voice (formerly GrandCentral), the telecommunications service developed by the company, now comes equipped with a new feature, one that could entice more small business owners to use it. The voicemail feature, for example, lets Google Voice users access voicemail not just from their phones but also through a computer; messages are transcribed automatically into text and can be read on a Gmail-like – Read the full article
I am sure that Apple users and gadget lovers knows who Siri is. Siri is one of the new features that Apple introduced to their iPhone 4S. Siri is a voice-activated assistant that extends the functionality of the iPhone. It allows for hands free use of the phone as Siri will execute actions like sending of email or text, searching the net, calling a contact and more with just a simple voice command. This could have been a cool feature but it turns out, it has some issues. One of the problems that have been discovered with Siri a few days after it was launched was that it poses a great security risk because Siri can be activated even on a passcode-locked phone. This means that even strangers can issue commands to Siri since it is not tied to a single voice. Aside from this security threat, studies have shown that iPhone 4S consumes more data usage and it is – Read the full article

This is important — Congress is considering two bills (“Protect IP” and “SOPA”) that would let the government or any corporation censor the internet, using the same DNS-blocking techniques as Iran or China. PROTECT IP Act Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo. The bills are ostensibly to stop copyright and trademark infringement, but they won’t. Instead– they’ll let the government shut down almost any social media website, since any site can be shut down just for audio, video, text, or even *links* posted by its users. Any corporations will have the power to bankrupt any website or organization by cutting it off from payments, advertising and donations– without so much as a court order. The law is being pushed by some of the strongest lobbies in Washington, it has broad bipartisan support, and it’s likely to pass in some form.
