Social media seems to be dominating the lives of Internet users today, with 800 million users alone on Facebook. Other sites like Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and YouTube don’t seem to be doing too bad, either.

It is amidst the rise of this new era of social media that businesses are now adopting new online marketing strategies to promote their products and services. Yes, we’re talking about the increasing importance of having a social media strategy. This post provides some guidelines on creating your own social media strategy, as well as a number of essential tips on marketing on today’s most popular social networks and platforms.

Define your goals: Before you take the plunge into social media, it’s important to define your objectives first. What do you really hope to achieve by going social? Do you intend to boost traffic? Would you like to increase your number of followers? Do you aim to promote a new campaign or brand awareness program? Have a brainstorming session and jot down the goals which you are looking to achieve by joining Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and so on.

Determine your target group: Once you’ve defined your goals, it’s time to determine who your target audiences are. For this, you need to carry out proper research. It’s not enough to know them; you have to understand them, know their wants and needs. Also, make sure you see what they have to say about you and things related to your niche.

Assign roles and responsibility: It’s difficult to carry out a social media strategy without first assigning roles and responsibilities to people. Chalk out a proper plan to determine who tweets to whom, who responds to comments on Facebook, who posts new content and links, etc.

Engage your audience: Once you’ve made your presence felt on social media, slowly you will come across people. Engage them. Interact with them. Speak to them about your brand, collect feedback from them, and find new ways to improve based on what they say and expect.

Promote your networks: Sure, you’re promoting your brand via social media. But that doesn’t mean you can’t promote your social media networks as a part of your brand. You can do so by leveraging other online marketing platforms like E-mail signatures, newsletters, and online ad in order to get more people to join and connect to your social networks.

An effective social media strategy can truly help a business flourish. Don’t worry if you’re new to the whole concept; slowly and steadily – with the help of the above tips – you’ll see a valuable return to the time and money you invest in social media marketing.
